Meet Kara
Owner & Founder
I bring over 40 years of life experience, including being a competitive athlete, a teacher, a CrossFit owner and head coach, a therapist, a mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, and a Korean-Japanese adoptee.
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling at the Dominican University of California in San Rafael, CA, and graduated with Psi Chi Honors. I later received my Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Therapy at The University of Akron in Akron, OH, and graduated as a Golden Key International Honour Society member.
I have completed internships, volunteer work, and thousands of hours of clinical work in various locations, including The Larkspur Center for Brain Injury Recovery, The Rape Crisis Center of Marin, Bellefaire JCB Residential Treatment Center, The University of Akron’s Counseling Clinic, and Searchlight Family Therapy private practice.
I am trained in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Level 1 Trained in Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Level 2 in progress), and EMDR Therapy (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), and I continue to learn and enhance my skills and professional development.
I am a member of the AAMFT, the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy, and the EMDRIA: EMDR International Association.
My Approach
Kintsugi Counseling Services is client-centered, meaning I try to get to know my clients as they see themselves, meet them where they are in their life journey, and then gently nudge them toward the life they want to cultivate. The treatment plan is an ongoing process that is continuously collaborative with the clients. Just as a well-fitted suit or dress needs customization, so does a treatment plan.
Why Book a Complimentary 30-min Consultation with Kara?
Just as you shop around for a hair stylist, a primary care physician, a dentist, and even a fitness coach, so too should you shop around for a therapist until you find the right fit. I am not a good fit for everyone, and not everyone is a good fit for me. Therefore, I encourage you to schedule a complimentary 30-minute consultation so that we can discuss your needs and goals, and I can assess if my services may be appropriate, or if I need to refer out. My goal is to get your needs met, whether that is with me or another mental health professional.
